Monopoly GO! (v1)
In 2017, I lead the design team for Monopoly GO!, which was a much different game than is in the app store today. A mid-core, synchronous PvP adaptation of the Monopoly Board Game, it was designed to evolve the widely loved, turn-based casual board game into a real-time competitive play.
As Lead UX Designer, I led an international Munich-based, cross-functional design team of 10, including UX designers, UI designers, artists, and tech artists in the challenging task of communicating complex game play quickly so players could strategically play their moves in reaction to their opponents actions in real time! See a video of the game mechanics (and the UX complexity involved in communicating the synchronous play and competitive strategies) to the right!
Despite strong early engagement from competitive players, soft launch testing revealed that the synchronous PvP mechanics introduced too much complexity for the broader, casual audience the IP attracted. The project was ultimately pivoted into a new, ultra casual direction that better suited the ubiquitously loved and nostalgic IP.
Near the end of my tenure, I supported early concept exploration for the rebooted vision, contributing early foundations that would evolve into the globally successful Monopoly GO! known today. I would rejoin the project in it’s later stage as an interim lead to get them back on track and ready for launch. Check out work on that project here.
